The University of Burgos has joined the Regional University Network-European University (RUN-EU) and will participate in the proposal of this alliance for the Erasmus+ 2023 call for European universities, which will be presented in January 2023 to the European Union for the period 2023-2029, as reported by the rector Pérez Mateos in the Governing Council held this morning.
"This integration is a fact of extraordinary importance for the University of Burgos, but also the city and the province," said Pérez Mateos.
RUN-EU was founded in 2020 and until the incorporation of the University of Burgos, it was formed by seven universities, all of them public, from six European countries: Politecnico de Leiria (Portugal), TUS. Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (Ireland), IPCA. Instituto Politécnico do Cavado e do Ave (Portugal), HAMK. Häme University of Applied Sciences (Finland), SZE. Széchenyi Egyetem. University of Györ (Hungary), NHL Stenden. University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands) and FHV. Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (Austria).
RUN-EU is not just an alliance of higher education institutions. It is a European university project oriented towards regional development, which embodies the values of sustainability, multiculturalism, and inclusion in all its work.
The UBU overcame what the rector described as a "tough evaluation process" for its integration, in which FAE, institutions such as the City Council and the Provincial Council and the leading representatives of society also participated, whom he thanked for their support.
At the Gothenburg Summit in 2017, the leaders of the European Union (EU) set out a vision of education and culture. Among their decisions they advocated strengthening strategic partnerships across the EU between higher education institutions and promoting the constitution, by 2024, of a set of "European Universities", which would be networks of universities across the EU created from below, allowing students to graduate by combining periods of study in several EU countries, thereby contributing to the international competitiveness of European universities.
Developed jointly by higher education institutions, student organizations, Member States and the European Commission, the European Universities Initiative responds to this call. Thanks to the progress made during the initial phase, the Initiative is now an integral part of the Erasmus+ 2021-2027 program.
"European Universities is also a flagship initiative of the European University Strategy, which sets the objective of supporting 60 European Universities comprising more than 500 higher education institutions by mid-2024.
With this integration, ratified last week on the occasion of the second General Assembly of the European University Regional University Network in Finland, the University of Burgos has taken an essential step in its international positioning and future strategy.
