The Teatro Principal of Burgos is a building from the Isabelline era located at the beginning of the Paseo del Espolón, next to the Provincial Council Palace. Its construction began in 1843 by the architect Bernardino Martínez de Velasco, under the direction of Francisco de Angoitia, and it was inaugurated in 1858. From its inauguration until 1956 it hosted a large number of concerts and shows. The so-called Salón de Recreo was located in the same building. After the 1997 renovation, carried out under the direction of the architect José María Pérez González, the building recovered its dance, theatre and music activity, managed by the Municipal Institute of Culture of the Burgos City Council.

In the same building there is a public library, an exhibition hall, two conference rooms, administrative offices, the so-called Casa de los Gigantillos (where the big and small giants that parade and dance at the city's festivals are displayed) and a café with a terrace overlooking the Espolón.
